The History of the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation Tribal Council

It’s in 1992, in Kitcisakik, that a General Assembly was held for the creation of the Algonquin Anishinabeg Nation Tribal Council. The main objective for representation on land claims.

At the time, five communities (Abitibiwinni, Eagle Village, Lac Simon, Long Point and Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg) took part in this initiative. It was decided that the headquarters would be located in Kitigan Zibi because of its proximity to Ottawa.

The Council started its activities in an office on Fafard Street with a personnel consisting of two employees. No services were offered to the communities at that time, as the organization was concentrating on political issues.

It is only in 1996 that an Architect, an Engineer and a Human Resources Advisor were hired.

In 1999, following its request, Kitcisakik became one of the community members and Wahgoshig became the seventh member in 2000 joining strictly for political affiliation.

A new building was built and in 2001 the Tribal Council moved into its new office located at 81 Kichi Mikan.

In 2004 the Information Officer and an Economic Development Officer positions were created and filled. This now brings the total number of full time employees to nine.
